Does eating slowly change how much we eat?

Move past “chew more” and look at what experiments found when they changed the pace itself.

A systematic review identified 22 studies that experimentally altered eating rate and measured intake, hunger or both. Instructions, texture and timed prompts were among the different methods.

Slower conditions were associated with less intake than faster conditions.

Intake moved, while post-meal hunger did not clearly differ.

The review found no significant relation between eating rate and subjective hunger immediately after the meal or up to 3.5 hours later. Less intake did not automatically mean more reported hunger—and slower eating did not guarantee fullness.

Pace makes more sense as a condition in how a meal unfolds than as proof that hunger is right or wrong.

Slowing a laboratory meal is not the same as changing daily life.

Studies used verbal instructions, harder textures and computer cues. Whether the same effect lasts through work breaks and family dinners is a different question.

A fast lunch can be kept as information—“today was rushed”—instead of a failure.

Rather than scoring chews, notice the space between bites.

A photo does not time a meal. It can still bring a rushed lunch back.

When meal photos sit in time order, a lunch between meetings and a slower evening can return with their context.
